Persian

Persian Rugs go back to 2,500 years ago and through centuries of creativity the art of carpet weaving which was passed from father to son, has achieved a great degree of perfection. Starting as mere items of flooring to protect from the cold and the damp in tribal homes, rugs became items of wealth and distinction in the homes of noblemen.

This art evolved through the centuries and various dynasties and reached its peak during the Safavid dynasty in the 16th century with the reign of Shah Abas who encouraged commerce and set Isfahan as the new capital. He created a court workshop for skilled craftsmen to produce beautiful carpets and rugs. Unfortunately, with the destruction of Isfahan by the Afghan invasion in 1722 much of this craft ended with it only remaining in smaller villages.
