The art of carpet weaving in India was introduced by Mogul Akbar in the 16th century who brought weavers from Persia to make Indian Rugs for his Palace. These talented craftsmen set up workshops using local workers in some key areas in Agra, Dehli and Lahore. The Antique Indian Rugs created during that time are called ‘Mughals’ – very similar to Persian Rugs but with an Indian touch often featuring floral and animal patterns set in deep colours.

Akbar’s son, Jahangir continued in his father’s footsteps conveying his taste for exotic world through the use of earthy colour palette and floral ornaments with a huge amount of focus on detailed elements.

With the reign of Shah Jahan, carpet design evolved to include picturesque landscapes and mystical fairytale animals adding a degree of magic to the Indian carpet design.

Our Collection of Antique Indian Rugs have many stunning pieces: Agra, Mughals, Amritsar to name a few.
