This is one of the antique Serapi rugs woven in the town of Heriz is northwest Persia early 20th century.  Serapi rugs are known for their geometrical central medallions and use of rich red, rust or dark blue field.  Serpai rugs are highly sought after.  This piece is woven on a wool foundation and wool pile, and it has symmetrical knotting.
