This is an antique Khotan rug woven in east Turkestan during the first quarter of the 20th century circa 1920 – 1930 and measures 274 x 125 cm in size. This piece has a triple medallion design decorated with a geometric floral design surrounded by abstract butterfly motifs and four hooked medallions. It has two main borders the outer border has a cloud design, and the inner border has a variant of the Greek key design both of Chinese influence. The field and borders both incorporate a unique pale purple and beige colored background making it highly decorative. This Khotan has been woven on a cotton foundation using all wool pile in natural vegetable dyes and has been preserved in overall good condition retaining most of its original full pile.
