DETAILS

This is an antique Khotan rug woven in east Turkestan during the first quarter of the 20th century circa 1910 – 1920 and measures 423 x 200 cm in size. This piece has a centralized triple medallion design where the central medallion is decorated with abstract butterfly motifs and the top and bottom medallions are decorated with pomegranates. The rest of the field is designed with an array of large-scale geometric and floral motifs set on a yellow background color. The outermost border has a polychrome cloud design inspired by Chinese tradition and textile productions and the accompanying border has a variant of the Greek key design which is also indicative of Chinese influence. This Khotan has been woven on a cotton foundation using all wool pile and 100% natural vegetable dyes and has been preserved in overall great condition retaining most of its original full pile.
