DETAILS

This is one of the Kazak antique rugs woven in the western part of the Caucasus mountains at the beginning of the 20th century circa 1910. It has a repeating triple medallion design set on a red background colour. The field is decorated with many tribal motifs such as stars, double headed arrows, chickens, dogs, and the famous “S” motif. Each medallion has a blue background colour with the center box flanked with larger scaled floral motifs as well as at the top and bottom of each medallion is a hidden cross motif that is one of the most important aspects of Armenian weavings. The main border is comprised of repeating star motifs interconnected with each other set on a bright white background which creates a dramatic colour contrast with the rest of the rug and draws the viewers’ attention to the border.
