The early European rugs and decorative tapestries date back to the Roman Empire which was then inherited by the Medieval Europe. France was one of the pioneers of manufacturing rugs in Western Europe with the very first manufacturing being done for King Louis XIV.

During the 18th century, the Savonnerie style was born. This was especailly crafted to suit King Louis XIV’s ornate taste. In parallel, Aubusson style made its entry at the same time as an alternative to the Savonnerie style and more appealing to a wider range of tastes. Both Savonnerie and Aubusson Rugs are famous and sought-after to this date.

Following the emergence of these two styles, other forms of weaving such as needlepoint embroidery were introduced and hence the emergence of Tapestry.

Our Collection of European Antique Rugs consists of some very exquisite pieces ranging across these styles: Aubussons, Savonnerie, Tapestry.
