Carpets have been in the Chinese tradition for over 2,000 years and used in the Palaces of the various Emperors. Rug and carpet weaving was officially introduced in China sometime around the 16th century.

The design of Chinese Rugs is often inspired from porcelain and silk patterns with the occasional use of religious symbols such as the dragon. The main manufacturing regions are Ningxia, Kansu, Inner Mongolia and Suiyan.

The main manufacturing regions are Ningxia, Kansu, Inner Mongolia and Suiyan. Chinese rugs and carpets have large knots hence their thickness. Yet, they are soft and flexible. In the newer rugs, the Senneh technique of asymmetrical knotting is used resulting in thicker and more compatct rugs with manufacturing centers being around the cities of Beijing and Tianjin. These rugs are known as Ningxia, Tientsin, Paotow and Peking.
