This is an antique Mahal rug woven in Central Persia in the first quarter of the 20th century circa 1900 -1910. The field is designed with repeating rows of interlocking sickle leaf motif enclosing geometric floral motifs and columns of clovers with an array of flowers set on a red-coloured background. The border is decorated with floral motifs with protruding blossoming flowers surrounded by an array of floral motifs set on a blue background creating a colour contrast against the red field. This piece has been preserved in overall good condition retaining its original pile and has been woven on a cotton foundation using all wool pile and 100% natural vegetable dyes.
